Tourism of Sanxenxo has already begun the necessary administrative procedures to tackle the rehabilitation and conditioning of the “Don Fernando house” with the aim of converting it into a “Marine house”, training room and traditional fishing arts exhibition. To this initiative must be added the implementation of guided tours in the village of Portonovo.
With these actions they intends to put in value the historical heritage that represents the fishing activity in the villa, giving to know their traditions, culture, buildings related to the sea, gastronomy or rigs, among others.
Tourism of Sanxenxo aims to bring to local communities, students, school children and tourists to the world of fishing and sea from a real didactic standpoint, favoring to delve into the knowledge of the various fishing gears and making this experience unique, both in the perception of the sea environment as of the life within the fishing village and its people.
Visitors can explore in a morning walk the main points of interest that is called 'A morning at Portonovo: Traditions, local habits and history' and that will begin with an explanation about the history of Portonovo. After a visit to the fishmarket to check the daily variety of fish and seafood that depending on the season are sold in the market, a visit to the beach of Portonovo and his dune system; visit the fishing port and marina; and will receive an explanation about the traditions and habits of the village, as the baptism of the river bridge or the meeting.
After visit the statue monument 'A Peixeira', (the fisherwoman) the route will continue in the old town of Portonovo, the field of San Roque and ends in the known as “Rua dos viños” (wine street).
The itinerary 'Portonovo fisher village at sunset' will be celebrated in the afternoon and will allow the visitors feel that they are a part of the fishing activity and learn about the different sea offices in addition to the processes required to transform the daily catch in exquisite pieces of our gastronomy.
An explanation of the history of Portonovo and their special relationship with the sea and fishing, as well as the importance to the village that has the organization of the fishermen known as “Cofradia” or fishermen's guild and the famous womans of Portonovo who set up the networks; a walk through the fishing port and marina; a visit to the fish market with assistance to the fish auction and a detailed explanation of the fishing art.
